Dr. Jaime Mendez likes to say he became an optometrist almost by accident.

A friend was working for an optometrist and told him, more or less, “hey, come check this out.” He took a job as an optometric technician. He didn’t need glasses at the time, and he’ll admit he didn’t even know what an optometrist did. But once he started learning, he was fascinated by the eyes and by the visual process, and he was very happy to have found his passion. What started as a job became a career.

That was the beginning of a path that has now led him to our office. We’re excited to welcome Dr. Jaime Mendez, OD, to the team at Insight Vision Optometry, Las Vegas.

Nearly Nine Years of Caring for Las Vegas Eyes

Dr. Mendez isn’t new to this city. He has been practicing optometry in Las Vegas for nearly nine years, so he joins us already knowing the community he’s here to serve.

He earned his undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Science in Basic Medical Sciences, from Washington State University (go Cougs), and his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. He also holds Nevada state certification for the co-management of primary open-angle glaucoma.

Before any of that, he learned eye care from the ground up as an optometric technician, working hands-on with patients and testing equipment before he ever started optometry school.

What Dr. Mendez Focuses On

Dr. Mendez fits right into what Insight Vision Optometry, Las Vegas does best: care for eyes that ordinary glasses and off-the-shelf contacts don’t serve well. His clinical interests include:

Custom and specialty contact lenses: including scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, and rigid gas permeable lenses for irregular corneas.
Keratoconus and other complex corneal conditions.
Myopia management for children: orthokeratology (ortho-k), low-dose atropine, Stellest myopia control lenses, and MiSight 1 day contact lenses.
Cornea and dry eye care, a constant in the Las Vegas climate.
Primary and routine eye care, including comprehensive eye exams for the whole family.
Eye emergencies, from red, painful eyes to sudden changes in vision.

Outside the Office

When he’s not seeing patients, Dr. Mendez loves playing sports and staying active. He’s also a dad to two young children, which, in his words, means a lot of engineering projects: LEGO builds, mud castles, you name it. Mostly he just tries to stay active and have fun with his family.

As a parent of young kids himself, he understands what families are balancing when they come in, whether it’s a first eye exam or a plan for a child’s changing prescription.

Joining a Team Built Around Specialty Care

Dr. Mendez joins our doctors, Dr. Stephanie Woo, OD, FAAO, FSLS, Dr. Nathan Schramm, OD, FAAO, FSLS, FBCLA, and Dr. Thanh Mai, OD, FSLS, in a practice that began as a clinic devoted entirely to custom contact lenses. That focus on specialty lenses, myopia control, and hard-to-fit eyes is exactly where his interests lie, and we’re glad to have another experienced set of hands on it.
