Why Scleral Topography Matters for Custom Scleral Lenses

To understand custom lenses, we first have to look at the limitations of standard eye mapping.

The Limitation of Corneal Topography

A traditional corneal topographer takes an image of the front part of your eye (the cornea) and generates a colorful map showing steep and flat curvatures. While crucial for detecting corneal diseases, regular topographers give zero information about the white part of your eye (the sclera).

Since scleral lenses rest entirely on the sclera, putting a standard scleral lens on an irregular eye often results in compression, redness, and irritation.

The Solution: Scleral Profilometers

Scleral topographers solve this by mapping the entire surface, including the sclera. This gives us the exact shape of the landing zone.

For example, if a patient has severe keratoconus and a small pinguecula (an elevation on the eye), a scleral topographer captures that elevation so we can design a lens that vaults over the bump perfectly.

The "Sock" Analogy: Prep for your visit

Do NOT wear contact lenses for at least 48 hours prior to your sMap appointment. Contact lenses alter the squishy tissue of your eye. Think of a tight-fitting sock—when removed, it leaves compression lines on your skin. We need your eye to return to its natural shape.

Yellow Dye & Multi-Gaze

We instill a mild yellow dye. You will look straight, down, and up while the machine uses reflections to capture highly detailed surface images.

Diagnostic & Lab Design

The doctor checks your prescription with a diagnostic lens, then sends the 1 million data points to the lab where special software designs your lens.

How the EyePrint Fitting Process Works

Preparation & Mixing

In the exam chair, the doctor reviews the process. First, the impression material is mixed together in a special tube and inserted into a small tray. It sets up in the tray for about 40 seconds.

The 90-Second Impression

The tray is inserted under your upper and lower lids and sits on your eye for about 90 seconds. It is safe and painless; most patients exhibit a "funny gooey feeling."

Vision & Diagnostics

If the EyePrint is for vision correction, the doctor may place a diagnostic scleral lens on your eye to determine what prescription to add into your EyePrint.

Lab & 3D Scanning

The perfect impression is mailed to the laboratory where a 3D scanner evaluates millions of points on the mold to capture all irregularities and curves.

Custom Fabrication

The information from the scanner is sent to the lathe, which cuts and shapes the lens using special software. No guesswork is involved.

Delivery

Most devices are fabricated and shipped back within 4 weeks. An expedited overnight option is available for an additional cost to receive your lens within 3–5 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. To be an EyePrint Practitioner, you must become certified in the technology. Doctors may fly to the lab in Colorado for a day long training or have a lab representative come to the office to train the doctor. During this training, practitioners learn about the technology, design process, fabrication, and practice the impression process several times. The impression must be well centered and usable for the laboratory.

Unless a doctor is seeing many patients who need specialty contact lenses, it would not make sense financially to include this into their practice. The EyePrint team also selects the doctors who are eligible for the technology. Practitioners are only eligible if they demonstrate proficiency in specialty contact lenses, and treat a large number of patients.

Yes — please remove all contact lenses at least 48 hours before your appointment so your eye returns to its original shape for the most accurate impression possible.

For most patients, the impression process is not painful. Most patients exhibit a “funny gooey feeling.” The eyelids are also stretched a bit when the impression is in the eye, so some people feel like their eyelid is stretch-y.

It depends. The impression has to be near perfect for the laboratory to use the data. If the impression does not look perfect, the doctor will have to repeat the impression.

Your impressions are mailed to the EyePrint laboratory, where they are 3D-scanned and used to design a fully custom device matched to your eye condition. The finalized design is precision-cut on a lathe and shipped back to our office.

Most devices arrive within 4 weeks. An expedited 3–5 day option is also available (see next question).

Yes. For an additional fee, impressions are overnight-shipped and prioritized by the lab. Most patients receive their lens within 3–5 business days.

The time spent designing your unique device and the cost involved to create something so custom is a very time consuming and tedious process. Multiple people are involved when designing your EyePrint, and the technology used is unlike any other lens. This is why the lens costs so much more than a traditional scleral lens.

If the device chips or breaks within the first 6 months, there is a warranty that covers a replacement at no charge. If the lens chips or breaks after this time period, you are responsible for paying for a new device. The device cost will be a lot less than the original fitting.

Most insurances do not recognize the billing codes used for the EyePrint, however we have had several patients succeed in getting partial or full reimbursement from their insurance companies.
