Most contact lens problems can be solved with off-the-shelf or semi-custom lenses. EyePrintPRO is for the cases that cannot. According to a 2024 survey published in Eye & Contact Lens, only about 17% of scleral-lens-fitting eye doctors in the United States have access to impression-based technology like EyePrintPRO. At your first visit, Dr. Woo or one of our Fellows of the Scleral Lens Society — Dr. Thanh Mai, FSLS, or Dr. Nathan Schramm, FSLS, FBCLA — will examine your eyes, review your visual history, and decide whether EyePrintPRO, a standard scleral, or a different specialty lens is right for you. We use anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) to measure the shape of your eye in real time and confirm whether an impression is the best path forward.
If EyePrintPRO is the right fit, we capture the shape of your eye using a soft, FDA-approved polyvinyl siloxane material. You sit comfortably in the exam chair while the material conforms to the surface of your eye. We use only numbing drops — no needles or sutures. According to a 2024 study in Contact Lens & Anterior Eye, the impression itself takes a median of about 15 minutes. Once it sets, we ship it overnight to the EyePrintPRO lab.
Lab technicians scan your impression and design a lens from your unique three-dimensional map. Because the lens is built from your actual eye shape — not selected from a trial set — fewer back-and-forth refits are needed. The 2024 study found that about 90% of impression-based lenses are adequate on the first design, compared with about 80% from image-based methods. Your finished lens typically arrives at our clinic in 2 to 3 weeks.
When your lenses arrive, you return to Insight Vision Optometry, Las Vegas, for a dispensing visit. Dr. Woo or one of our doctors checks the fit, measures your vision, and trains you to insert, remove, clean, and store the lenses. Your cornea is the clear front layer of your eye. When it loses its smooth, round shape — from keratoconus (a condition where the cornea thins and bulges into a cone), pellucid marginal degeneration (thinning along the lower edge), or scarring from infection or injury — light no longer focuses correctly. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, keratoconus affects roughly 1 in 2,500 adults in the United States (Singh et al., American Journal of Ophthalmology, 2024). EyePrintPRO is built directly from the unique surface of your eye, so it can correct vision when no off-the-shelf lens can.
Patients who have had corneal transplants, radial keratotomy (RK), LASIK, PRK, or glaucoma filtering surgery often develop eye surfaces that ordinary lenses cannot accommodate. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (EyeNet, 2022), EyePrintPRO is one of the only lens designs that can turn the lens edge a full 90 degrees up and over a glaucoma filtering bleb without pressing on it. It is also the lens of choice after corneal transplants, where suture lines and graft-host junctions create asymmetric surfaces that no topographer can fully measure.

In the most-cited published study of EyePrintPRO outcomes (Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2018), best-corrected vision improved from an average of 20/36 to 20/21 across 14 eyes of 10 patients. A larger 95-eye study in Cornea (2021) reported median vision sharpened from approximately 20/100 to about 20/24 after EyePrintPRO fitting (Silverman et al.).
For the most challenging eyes, Insight Vision Optometry, Las Vegas, is the only clinic in Nevada that combines EyePrintPRO with Ovitz higher-order-aberration optics. In a published case report in Eye & Contact Lens, an EyePrintPRO lens combined with wavefront-guided optics reduced higher-order aberrations by 64% to 67% and gained 2 lines of best-corrected vision in a patient who had already failed traditional scleral lenses (Gelles et al., 2022).
Scleral lenses overall have a strong safety record. The largest study to date — a survey of more than 72,000 scleral lens wearers in Eye & Contact Lens (2023) — reported the following 1-year rates of complications serious enough to stop lens wear: corneal swelling 1.2%, blood vessel growth into the cornea 0.53%, microbial keratitis (sight-threatening infection) 0.45%, and limbal stem cell deficiency 0.20% (Schornack et al.). Fewer than 1 in 200 wearers per year develop a serious eye infection.
EyePrintPRO specifically appears safer than average in published series. In the multicenter Contact Lens & Anterior Eye study (Nau et al., 2021), only 2 of 70 eyes discontinued EyePrintPRO due to complications. Dr. Woo and our team monitor your corneal health closely at each visit using AS-OCT and high-magnification slit-lamp examination so problems are caught early.
EyePrintPRO is medically necessary for many of the conditions it treats — keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, post-LASIK ectasia, post-transplant eyes, severe dry eye with vision loss, and others. Most major medical and vision plans cover medically necessary scleral lenses (HCPCS code V2531) when documentation supports the diagnosis. Coverage rules tightened in 2024: VSP and EyeMed both narrowed their criteria, and many plans now require that lenses improve vision by at least two lines over glasses.
