This section explains the basics of amniotic membranes and why a cryopreserved option is helpful.
An amniotic membrane is a thin layer taken from donated placental tissue. When placed on the eye, it delivers healing proteins that calm inflammation and support new cell growth.
Most membranes are dried and packaged, but Prokera is kept cold so it stays closer to its natural state. Cryopreservation helps keep more healing factors active.
The tissue is held between two clear polycarbonate rings. We gently insert the ring on the eye, then cover the eye with a patch to improve comfort while the membrane does its work.
When healing is complete, we bring the patient back to take out the device. The process is quick and comfortable.
A topical anesthetic keeps the eye numb so the patient feels little to no discomfort.
We always use blunt tip forceps. Narrow or jeweler’s forceps can slip on the ring and should be avoided.
With the patient looking up, we gently pull the lower lid down, grasp the bottom of the ring, and guide it down and out of the eye.
These common questions can help you feel more at ease with the procedure.
No. The anesthetic numbs the eye, and most patients feel only light pressure during removal.
The entire process is usually finished in a few minutes, including the time for the anesthetic to work.
Vision may be slightly blurry for a short time, so bring a driver if possible. If your vision clears quickly and you feel comfortable, you may drive.
